BICOL MOVEMENT FOR DISASTER RESPONSE (BMDR)

December 7, 2007

Dear Friends,

The Bicol Movement for Disaster Response (BMDR) is a multisectoral taskforce composed of people’s organizations, NGOs and individuals from the Bicol region. It was formed to gather support and initiate relief and rehabilitation drives for the victims of Supertyphoon Reming, which left behind 518 dead and 648 missing persons in the province of Albay alone.

As of December 8, the Albay provincial disaster coordinating council reported that Reming has affected close to 670,000 people, while more than 30,000 were relocated to evacuated centers around the province. Storm-induced mudflows complicated the problem, swamping several towns of Albay with mud brought by volcanic debris from the slopes of Mayon Volcano.

In the context of this catastrophic humanitarian crisis, the BMDR appeals to all patriotic and civic-minded citizens and friends to contribute material and monetary donations to provide relief for the disaster-stricken Bicolanos, who were doubly burdened by the recent eruption of Mayon Volcano this year and the recent supertyphoons Milenyo and Reming.

The relief campaign is an initial part of our collective effort to bring back hope to the victims of these calamities, who are largely comprised of poor farmers, fisherfolk, laborers, and other marginalized sectors. It is common knowledge that victims from the toiling masses bear the brunt of calamities far more heavily than their more affluent counterparts, with the latter having better chances of coping with disasters.

Attached are the list of goods needed for the relief effort, as well as a list of light construction materials for the families with severely damaged housing. For inquiries and coordination, please contact Ms. Agnes Pacres at (+6352) 480-5227 or +639198467571. You may send your monetary assistance through the following account at Metrobank – Legazpi Branch:

Account Name:            Ma. Agnes M. Pacres / Ma. Teresa M. Marbella

     Savings Account No :   1383138227929

It is an opportune time for all Filipinos and foreign friends to come together and help the devastated Bicolanos. Our individual and collective contributions could help victims set their lives anew despite these tumultuous events that struck the region.

Thank you and more power.

In service,

Jose Pernia

Coordinator
